Some of the important GIS tools like ArcGIS, QGIS, ENVI, GeoDa, GRASS GIS, and UrbanSim provides useful insight for predicting urban growth patterns. However for proper understanding these have to be used in combination suiting the relevant datasets and methodologies.It can ensure more informed decision-making and sustainable urban development.

Urban growth is shaped by urban policy. Specifically: spatial planning measures designed to stimulate growth, expansion or renewal in specific locations. Models to predict this growth need inputs such as long term planning goals and incentives aimed at achieving specific results (transportation planning, public facility strategy, inequality reduction, etc). The correlation between policy and its (eventual) results also needs to be evaluated, and must e incorporated as some kind of weighting factor in a learning model for spatial impact assessment. Together these are the fundamental inputs into a realistic spatial growth model. It is not (just) about tools….
