Editing is a tough job, and continuous training and certifications are the way to go. But, there are several opportunities out there, ranging from basic editing classes to proofreading and editing for the web. These classes are tailored individually for the needs of the students or professionals looking to improve their skills. For beginners, I'd recommend the editing basics or essentials. There are several academies and schools online that offer these courses for as low as $50. Some of them are free. All you need to do is make sure you attend all classes and apply for a certificate when completed for a fee. Scholarships are also given to indigent students. Professionals can go for specific courses for their specific needs.

While I agree with most of this article, you do not need an MA, you do need the ability and knowledge to carry out the work. Many night schools and colleges have courses that would suit the purpose and at affordable costs. This work is not easy and is time-consuming, but it is very worthwhile and rewarding.

We can't put an actual number to the places you can learn editing courses. Coursera, Udemy, and other online certifying platforms are doing a real job out there. There's a whole catalogue of good courses there to begin with.

Learn as many style guides as possible-- AP for sure; and Chicago Manual and APA if you want to do academic editing. Other than that READ just about any topic that does or does not interest you.
