What are the best decision-making practices for building trust and credibility with stakeholders?

To build trust and credibility, the objectives need to be set from perspective of stakeholders with whom the trust has be established, and the solution has to be arrived at, considering this objective. There is a tendency to come up with solutions that are optimal from the perspective of the team working on the problem, but these solutions fail to build trust in impacted stakeholders as they may find those biased against them.

When we have a problem, communicate it in all honesty to the team. Discuss the options available. Then move onto options desirable. Also bring out the ideal actions in the situation. These help the team to: 1. Prioritise what can be done urgently from the options available. 2. Choose the important desirable actions and work towards making them easily possible 3. Re-look at the strategy and see how the ideal actions can happen. This brings in transparency, ability to define and work toward solutions and buy the commitment from the teams by making them part of the whole decision making. Acknowledge and encourage the participation of everyone and their ideas and empowering them to take action

Facts are indeed crucial, and so is quantifying the damage that is caused by the problem. Whether it is loss of time, money, opportunities etc. Once the actual/potential damage is quantifyed, it is much easier to compare it to the resource that will be required to solve the problem.

It is important to call out the key benefit of having data and evidence as a critical - and early - step. It will never eliminate people's reliance on intuition and emotion, but it creates a baseline of common knowledge and understanding that narrows the discussion and can act as an arbiter in the decision process.

Such a kiss of death to the morale of the investigative team tasked with solving the current problem and future ones yet to occur.
