What are the best books to read to begin a career in Virtual Reality (VR)?

The two books I highly recommend to anyone who wishes to endeavour into VR today is Jaron Lainier’s “Down of the New Everything” and David Chalmers’s “Reality+.” These book won’t give you much tech base, but it will give you a solid foundation on how to think in this industry, inviting you to see immersive technologies through the lens of human experience.

Leslie Shannon's book, "Interconnected Realities" is clear and accessible, Jeremy Bailenson's "Experience on Demand" is foundational, and Jaron Lanier's "Dawn of the New Everything" is a philosophical classic on humanity in the age of virtualism - he founded the term "virtual reality". Finally, Ready Player One is a novel that enables readers to imagine how mixed reality media (virtual and augmented reality) could become part of our daily lives. Ready Player One illustrates how we go from passive consumption of printed information (our current internet) into interactive content and storytelling and enter a world of games, and storyliving. Get inspiration from “Snow Crash” and “Ready Player One” (avoid “Ready Player Two”). Have fun with the “Three Body Problem” trilogy. If you’re in XR business, you can never go wrong with “Blue Ocean Strategy”.

As a kid in the 80s and 90s the two books the shaped everything I think about #metaverse, #VR, and the idea of a truly digital future were "Neuromancer" by William Gibson and "Snow Crash" by Neil Stephenson. It's wild to go back and reread them today and realize they were written during the earliest days of dial-up.

To that end, I highly recommend Dr. Jeremy Bailenson's "Experience on Demand" and Matthew Ball's "The Metaverse: And How It Will Revolutionize Everything." Conversely, Matthew Ball's content is much more dense as he somehow manages to cover "everything" in every time. In a fast-evolving technology, books can be outdated fast. I suggest hands-on experience with e-learning, video tutorials, and most importantly experiments directly on the various platforms, a lot of which are free or offer free trials.

The best approach about UX in XR "UX for XR: User experience design and strategies for immersive technologies" by Cornel Hillman, newer than VR Book and very focus on UX

Specific to UX design, Cornel Hillman's UX for XR is great. The concepts and techniques are very easy to understand, implement, and conceptualize. Also, Hillman talks about a lot of fundamental software and tools that you can pick up relatively quickly.

These platforms are all free of charge. And as far as basic insights into VR are concerned, I can highly recommend the book "Reality+" by Chalmers.

Download UnrealEngine and Omniverse and start playing around with test concepts to get the basic fundamentals and functionalities correct. There are enough courses through these platforms to help you work on your skill and knowledge building. The issues you face doing the work and learning to overcome will be more beneficial than reading a book - unless your objective is learning the history and evolution of VR.

I've noticed that many XR devs downplay the importance of books when entering their careers. I think that's a mistake. While many books about XR won't provide the knowledge needed to build XR applications, they often touch on things that XR developers don't usually think about. These can include trends in other technologies that will impact the XR industry, regulatory trends that may stifle or invigorate the field, and the social and ethical implications of mounting displays and cameras to our faces. Additional industry context makes for a more well-rounded XR dev.
