The style guides are the best books for improving your proofreading skills. If you are familiar with The Chicago Manual of Style and the Associated Press Stylebook, you are well on your way. Familiarise yourself with a couple of good grammar and punctuation books. Keep them handy because it is hard to remember all the rules all the time. A good dictionary is essential, of course. And then read, read and read some more. Sometimes, the writing is amazing, and the editing is superb. And sometimes, you will notice small mistakes that a good editor should have picked up ('gotten' in a UK English manuscript is one of my pet hates).
