Yes, SBT can help to improve a new hire’s performance. As an example in the healthcare industry a new hire could do endless patient searches to acquire the necessary skills to identify the correct patient without creating a duplicate medical record number or selecting an incorrect patient thus corrupting someone else’s medical record. I found SBT to be very useful as it gave the new hire a controlled and safe environment allowing them to build their skills, confidence and knowledge without any of the consequences associated with mistakes in real-life situations.

Overall, I agree that using SBT would reduce the costs and risks of traditional training methods in the long run after a company’s initial investment. My concern would be solely relying on an SBT approach. SBT will only cover the real-life situations it was programmed to cover and as we know there are many variables and nuances that it won’t be able to simulate in many industries. There are glitches and software downtime that may negatively impact a new hire’s training as well. Additionally, it won’t provide a new hire with the advantages of an in-person classroom environment that help build interpersonal skills and team building.
