In an automotive assembly line, each vehicle or a batch of vehicles needs to be fitted with sub-assemblies or parts with differing specifications and/or from different tier-2 suppliers. This is necesary to meet customer requirements received from production planning which specify type and supplier for each component in the each vehicle on assebly line. Besides, minute defects which a human eye may fail to detect can be detected by comparing images with a known good part. Thus Vision systems can be used effectively to prevent errors due fitment of wrong or defective parts in the vehicle assembly.

Industrial robots are a good example of automation where safety of human users is of paramount importance. While the control programs of the robot execute repetitive task in operations like press, welding systems for automotive parts etc, it has to have built-in automatic safety measures to prevent injuries to operators. Vision system coupled with object detection and recongnition capabilities can enhance safety of such robotics based systems far beyond the basic measures by preventing accidental approach to a system in operation. And by its object detection and recognition capability, only authorised persons can start, stop and modify its programs and operations.
