What are the benefits of involving your team in process mapping?

Teams know the best now what happens at each stage of your work. They are the best people to suggest what will work and what not, what improvements should be done in process and how it should be laid out. At the same time when the help in setting the process, they are the decision maker and can't later complain that process is not right or has flaws.

In my opinion there is no way around involving the teams to get proper understanding of the process. No one who is not living directly "in the process" can ever point out all the problems that might be present and lead you to the best opportunities for improvement. What is usually needed though is the right guidance from an experienced facilitator to find all the "gems". It can be very challenging to do this exercise with truly valuable outcomes the first or even the second time. It takes at least a little bit of experience to get the most out of it.

I absolutely agree that involving your team in the process mapping is crucial but at the same time it is very important to understand when to involve them to get the highest value from the activity. What has worked the best in my experience is to use the Top-Down approach. It takes time but it usually provides the most benefits. The first level with the highest stakeholder to get their high-level view of the processes and also their vision. The second level with managers of all relevant teams to get the feeling for team processes and real links among the teams. The third with the teams, going through the specific details. It can obviously be adjusted as needed. Though in general this approach has always paid dividends for me.
