It could produce a lot of false positives or false negatives. An ATS that uses AI might not be able to pass regulation in certain markets. If I was founding a company tomorrow that I knew I planned to scale and hire for quickly, an ATS would be something I invested in very early on. Maybe not the most expensive and flashy one, but one nonetheless for compliance reasons would be top of mind.

If you plan on scaling your business IMHO an ATS is an essential tool to invest in. Like all tools, there are 'off the shelf', or 'bells and whistles' platforms - the complexity, and scale of your hiring needs will dictate the best platform for you. They enable you access to key data / metrics, promote EDI, streamline processes, and reduce human error + manual activities of your hiring team.

I don't actually think most companies doing a decent amount of hiring have true drawbacks of using an ATS. Rather, there may be training opportunities to those using it or tweaks to be made to the system, but on the whole there aren't many reasons to NOT use an ATS.

I do agree that there are some drawbacks from using an ATS. The biggest drawback in my opinion is missing out on the opportunity for someone that is passionate about doing the work, the person that is a team player, however they may not check all the boxes on their resume to make it to the interview using an ATS. You can always teach the job, but you can’t teach the soft skills that are necessary to be successful on the job.

I would say the #1 thing that companies neglect to do is to test the ATS with the primary team who is going to use it. As a recruiter, I have seen companies sometimes invest in a $10k ATS but only have the HR department test it. The hiring team is ultimately going to use the platform so get the buy-in from them first. Then the training will be easier to implement.
