Unnecessary spend on software licenses is so simple to eliminate with the right SAM/SLM software. However, it also requires a certain amount of getting your house in order and resources with the time and skills to identify overspend and underutilization. There are also point solutions for software like SAP, and you might find that you need more than one product. You WILL need trained resources to work with the SLM of your choice, and you will probably have some housekeeping to do. However, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

I already noted this above, but it is more about WHICH software is vital to your operation and can the tool you are evaluating analyze the mission-critical license usage. You will only get to grips with your license agreements and license optimization after you have the tool of your choice installed and operational. The RoI on the right tool can be spectacular. The risk of not having an SLM tool far outweighs the cost.

This is not an overnight solution. Centralized command and control is your first imperative, you don't want random licenses sitting on the shelf because a project that required them has completed. There is a path to SLM maturity that starts with knowing what you have, then identifying what you need. Isn't it ironic that license management (and the license budget) sits with IT, when the users of most of an organization's software are sitting in various business units? Users need to understand what their license usage costs, and a very good way to get the message across is with usage chargebacks to the respective business units (but be kind and educate first).
