For example, FDM builds will need support removal & maybe some hand finishing to make the parts smoother. Whereas, SLS parts will need to cool after building for a day otherwise you may end up with some warped products due to the thermal nature of the process. For example, if using powder based technologies like SLS, MJF & SAF; you will be limited to nylon based rigid thermoplastics. Most likely you'll choose PA11 or PA12 but if you need flame retardance or high strength, you have additional options. For FDM, you use filament so you can pretty much choose a material you want & find a spool that matches. It could be TPU, PLA, ASA, ABS, PEEK to name a few. Some materials aren't limited to one process or even one trade name due to competitors so always shop around/compare.

When looking at sustainable materials, there are a host of biodegradable filaments available but you may need to find a way to recycle or repurpose your used spools. For powder based technologies, PA11 is favoured as it uses castor beans, a renewable source that doesn't cause deforestation. However, companies like EOS are looking to create greener versions of existing materials with methods that do not rely on fossil fuels. These are in their infancy but the research is ongoing.
