1 What is SON?

SON is a concept that applies artificial intelligence and machine learning to LTE network management. SON can perform three main functions: self-configuration, self-optimization, and self-healing. Self-configuration means that SON can automatically set up and integrate new network elements, such as base stations, antennas, and cells. Self-optimization means that SON can continuously monitor and adjust network parameters, such as power, frequency, handover, load balancing, and interference management. Self-healing means that SON can detect and correct network faults, such as outages, congestion, or degradation.

SON cover all phase of life cycle of mobile network from planning, deployment, operations , maintenance and do the autonomously self configuration, self optimisation and self healing in a manner to self oraganise the network with zero touch automation.

2 What are the benefits of SON?

SON can offer several advantages to LTE network operators and users. It can enhance the speed, capacity, and reliability of LTE networks by adapting to changing traffic patterns, user behavior, and environmental conditions. This can in turn reduce the need for manual intervention, site visits, and network testing by automating network configuration and optimization tasks. 3 What are the challenges of SON?

SON is not a perfect solution for LTE optimization and it can bring some challenges and limitations for network operators and users. Furthermore, SON relies on collecting and processing large amounts of network data and user information, which can raise security and privacy concerns. The main challenge for using SON in LTE is inherent features/automations already introduced with LTE e.g. ANR which already takes care of neighbors. Other features such as Inter frequency load balancing take care of load balancing between different Lte layers. Thus these automations introduced by 3GPP and OEMs significantly reduce the application areas of SON.

4 How to use SON effectively?

SON is not a one-size-fits-all solution for LTE optimization, and careful planning, implementation, and evaluation are necessary to achieve desired results. When using SON, network operators should define clear objectives and criteria for network performance, quality, and efficiency; establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to measure and monitor the impact of SON; choose the right level and mode of automation that best suits their network needs, capabilities, and preferences; balance the trade-offs and conflicts by prioritizing and weighting the network objectives and criteria; and review and update the SON algorithms and processes regularly to reflect changing network conditions, user demands, and technological advancements.

5 What are the future trends of SON?

SON is a technology that has the potential to revolutionize LTE network optimization.
