A critical observation to be made using quality metrics dashboard is the reviewing the trend graphs periodically and take necessary steps to improve the trends. While raw counts (as in you have 300 defects) matters, having a plan to bringing down the "net" to 250 would be a good goal. This exercise teaches the teams a lot about their resource utilization, quality best practices, code and test coverage, and so on.
