What are the benefits and challenges of using OWASP ZAP for security testing?

Its an open source and there is no limitation if you are a security test expert. The limitation comes with scanning - though it provides many options in scanning, there are many false positives getting logged which is not the case when using paid tools like burp suite.

Undoubtedly its open-source nature makes it highly adaptable to different security needs. What stands out for me is its ability to identify common vulnerabilities like SQL injection and cross-site scripting—two areas where many applications still struggle. User can download it in the system and configure the proxy server which will further work as a middle men to penetrate the application to find out the potential breaks in the application. OWASP ZAP also has its predefined automation framework with multiple options e.g Spider, Ajax Spider, Active Scan, Fuzzing Passive Scan etc. Overall OWASP ZAP is a User Friendly Web application scanning tool to find out the breach in the application.

So basically OWASP ZAP works as a middle man between server and the application. we can scan the application through the ZAP tool and get the information about the request and response generated through the application but we can neglect the application after getting the request and response info in the ZAP and we can exploit the breach by changing send the request to the server. Using Fuzz option and open the the request in request/response editor we can inject he request with malicious data and we can try sending that again to the server to find out the vulnerability. there are other options available in ZAP like we can use custom scripts like sql injection, xss, alerts etc to exploit the application using fuzzer and find the breaks.

It is fully open source, free to download, install and start working. UI is user friendly and easy to understand. There are options available which may not be familiar for new users but to understand OWASP ZAP official website has a vast documentation. Very useful feature available freely like , active scanning , fuzzing, ajax spider, spider, session maintain, auto authentication, proxy server settings which are very easy to use. Reporting is something which is very useful and helpful to provide the information to dev team about the potential threats to the application. it also has multiple format option freely available.

The advantage of OWASP ZAP is that it offers both active and passive scanning features, allowing for a thorough assessment of security issues in web applications. In addition, the service provides comprehensive scanning capabilities for identifying security vulnerabilities in web applications, including both automated and manual testing options. OWASP ZAP is highly extensible, with support for various plugins and extensions. The challenge i have faced that there are a lot of documentation & videos tutorials available on its official website but those are not so effective as those are old. are there are not particular method available for the steps to start penetration testing. user needs to spend more time to understand with hit and try and learn. Also, Active scanning takes a lot of time and some time user face the inaccuracy result due to session timeout for the authentication. More importantly it is highly risky and unethical even if mistakenly used it in wrong way. like some time browser which has proxy set can have multiple extension and bookmarks so which scanning you application it gather the information about them as well. So be careful when use it.

In addition to the above, OWASP ZAP has a steep learning curve, especially for beginners with limited experience in security testing tools. Customizing it for specific testing scenarios can be complex and time-consuming, requiring a deep understanding of its features and configurations.
