Using segment routing with MVPN reduces the complexity of the core network by allowing the core to remain stateless with respect to multicast flows. In a telecommunications network I worked on, this was a significant benefit, as the core routers no longer needed to store multicast state information for each stream. Segment routing allowed the multicast state to be concentrated at the edges, where it was easier to manage. This simplification resulted in a cleaner, more efficient core network design, making it easier to maintain & reducing the risk of performance degradation as the network scaled.

Despite its benefits, using segment routing with MVPN also poses some challenges. Interoperability and compatibility may be limited in heterogeneous and legacy networks, and SR may not be compatible with existing features or options.
