A friend suggested using HackMD.io for markdown. She's a techwriter and said this about it: "HackMD is the best tool I've found for collaborative markdown. I think that ultimately storing the markdown in some brand of git repo is the way to go, but I don't think the back-and-forth of trying to hammer out a draft via GitHub comments and commits is a great use of time. Which is where HackMD shines. Do the back-and-forth in HackMD, and throw the "final draft" in the repo."
