What are the benefits and challenges of using log shipping for database replication?

Log shipping is early days a kind of BCP and we can partially High availability solution up to year 2005. It is just copying a logs to a secondary (read only database ) server and periodically restoring the logs on Secondary Server. The main disadvantage with the secondary server is that the logins will not be ported/copied to secondary as logins are server level. So any new user who want to access the secondary database for reporting purpose, can't make it as login does not exists for the new user. It requires down time in case of disaster/fail over which is not at all acceptable for the banking or any OLTP applications and also we tend to loose some data in case of a disaster.
