What are the benefits and challenges of rapid prototyping for online and blended learning?

When I am building a product or a service for my audience, I find it extremely useful to get constructive feedback and build a minimal viable product (MVP). MVP is a complete product without the bells and whistles. This helps the owner of the product or service understand if there is a true demand for it. Also, to get the feedback needed to be flexible and adjust for the next release.

It is more efficient to create a blueprint for an online course before attempting to build it, and thoroughly designing just one module can offer an opportunity to iterate on that level so the rest of the module designs can take advantage of what was learned in the prototype module design. As much as I am a fan of using rapid prototyping, I have made the mistake a few times of not fully preparing reviewers by explaining clearly that the prototype is a "rough draft" only. Sometimes the review comments can be about items that are not really important at all, merely cosmetic or seemingly obvious placeholders, which can distract from the more important aspects you were hoping for reviewers to notice.

It's a good practice that's consistent with longstanding practice in web design. However, we should always keep in mind that the ultimate limitation of all course design of any kind in advance is that incoming students are not carbon copies of previous students. There is usually a similar range of interests and issues from class to class, but not an identity, and over time that shared range of interests and issues will probably diminish from one incoming group of course participants to the next. The ideal course design is one specific to the students who _will be_ taking the course next, and that course design is at present impossible. Faculty and ID staff are never given sufficient information to design courses in advance in this way.
