The current challenge in this area is how to handle the increasing overheads and eliminate the hot spots created by 'skyscraper' cabinets with up to 30 kW of power each. Facility engineers also tend to worry about fluids moving into the data center. In fact, there is a perception among IT engineers that this should never be done. Fluid moving up to the data center floor is simply an engineering problem.

WUE (Water Usage Effectiveness) is also a trend now and effective management is vital to long-term sustainability within the data center industry. We are seeing that effective management starts with accurate measurement. PUE and now WUE for data centers can only be understood and achieved through accurate measurement by calibrated sensors. Our data center sensor technicians have inspected 107,813 BMS sensors and calibrated 91,386 BMS sensors in operational data centers and we have consistently uncovered that at least 1 in 4 sensors are faulty (installation, wiring, and labeling deficiencies or out of tolerance). Accurately calibrated sensors that reliably report accurate data to building management systems (BMS) is often over-looked.

When considering liquid cooling for data centers, it's crucial to also evaluate factors such as compatibility with existing infrastructure and hardware, scalability to accommodate future growth, and adherence to regulatory and safety standards. Assessing the total cost of ownership, including upfront investment, ongoing maintenance, and energy consumption, is essential for making informed decisions. Additionally, evaluating the potential impact on IT operations, such as changes in workflow or system downtime during installation or maintenance, helps mitigate disruptions.
