1 Benefits of FF and DCS integration

Foundation field bus enables multidrop connections i.e. it enables integrators to connect multiple sensors & actuators to a single cable. Apart from sensory data, it allows us to transmit status and diagnostic information as well which really ease out the trouble-shooting aspect of a control loop. This includes diagnostic data like sensor temperature, device status, control valve positioner supply pressure etc. Foundation field bus also enables some part of control logic to be implemented directly in the field instead of DCS hence promoting decentralized control. Due to lesser cable foot print, its footprint is not that large as of a conventional DCS. System installation time is greatly reduced.

I can add that Foundation FieldBus devices are much easier to maintain as well as to install and configure, field communicator can be easily connected to any free point of connection in the field network or from DCS power cabient and it can easily discover the whole network devices and this saves time and effort, no need to go to each device and try to connect with the leads, also easy to configure and have an overview from DCS, so sometimes no need to go to the site while troubleshooting. So I believe that FF is a very useful technology, lots of benefits are there.

2 Challenges of FF and DCS integration

This is true, despite of the FF benefits, there are some challenges in the FF and DCS integration, specially when different devices from different vendors are used, sometimes we need to select compatible FF devices and DCS vendors, I have faced some challenges also with the same FF device vendors, working with Pressure Transmitter Emerson Rosemount 2051 and 3051 electronic modules, they cannot be substituted with each other, the new revisions are not interchangeable with the old ones. You can replace a 3051 Revision 7 with a 3051 Revision 8, or a 2051 Revision 1 with a 2051 Revision 2, but you will need new DDs or DTMs, and to commission the new device as an “unlike” device replacement.
