What are the benefits and challenges of implementing ISO 44001 for collaborative business relationships?

In my experience the challenges for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises of utilising and gaining value from ISO 44001 is underestimated and not really recognised here. It can feel overly bureaucratic and provides and burdensome to implement and manage relationships in this way. I think the principles of ISO 44001 are sound and should be applied, however there are elements of the formal process that slow down agility in companies that thrive on beating competition to market. In addition, a smaller organisation that sees the value in using a formal collaborative approach often does not have a strong enough negotiating position to influence a larger partner to adopt this type of relationship.

Navigating the path of collaborative practices similar to ISO 44001's framework, one major hurdle was fostering an understanding throughout all organization levels about the long-term benefits despite the short-term efforts. Constant communication, persistence, and demonstrable wins were crucial to maintain momentum and ensure eventual success. And I would say that is all related to the level of leadership commitment and understanding. Before going into partnerships ensure executive sponsorship. Otherwise, I recommend to save the time and effort for all parties.
