The only downside, in my view, is that it primarily operates through the command line, which might be a bit daunting for newcomers. Thankfully, Zenmap, its graphical interface counterpart, eases that learning curve. While Nmap doesn't create network maps by default, its ability to uncover host and service information is invaluable.
