1 How FBRs work

A fluidized bed reactor consists of a vertical cylindrical chamber with a perforated plate at the bottom, where a gas (usually air) is injected. The gas velocity is adjusted to create a fluidized state, where the solid particles (usually ore or concentrate) are lifted and mixed by the gas stream. The fluidized bed behaves like a boiling liquid, with bubbles, currents, and turbulence. The gas can also be heated, either internally or externally, to provide the required temperature for the chemical reactions to occur. The fluidized bed can operate in different modes, such as bubbling, turbulent, or circulating, depending on the gas velocity and the particle size.

2 Advantages of FBRs

One of the main advantages of FBRs is that they provide a high degree of contact and mass transfer between the gas and the solid phases, which enhances the reaction rate and efficiency. FBRs also allow for a uniform temperature distribution and a good control of the operating conditions, which reduces the risk of overheating, sintering, or agglomeration of the particles. FBRs can also handle a wide range of feed materials, such as fines, coarse, or irregular particles, and can accommodate multiple reactions in the same reactor, such as roasting, reduction, or smelting. FBRs are also energy-efficient, as they can recover heat from the exhaust gas and use it for preheating or other purposes.

3 Disadvantages of FBRs

However, FBRs also have some disadvantages that limit their application in some cases. One of the main challenges of FBRs is to maintain a stable and homogeneous fluidization, which depends on several factors, such as the particle size distribution, the gas flow rate, the pressure drop, and the reactor geometry. If the fluidization is not optimal, it can cause problems such as defluidization, channeling, or entrainment of the particles. 4 Applications of FBRs

FBRs have been used for various pyrometallurgical processes, such as roasting, calcination, chlorination, reduction, smelting, and refining of different metals, such as copper, nickel, zinc, lead, gold, and platinum. Some examples of FBRs in pyrometallurgy are the Outotec roasting technology, the Noranda process, the QSL process, and the KIVCET process. FBRs can also be combined with other reactors, such as electric arc furnaces or converters, to form hybrid systems that optimize the energy and material balance.

5 Comparison with other reactors

FBRs have some advantages and disadvantages compared to other reactors used in pyrometallurgy, such as rotary kilns or electric arc furnaces.
