What are the advantages and disadvantages of using Boolean strings in job boards and resume databases?

However, there's a learning curve involved in crafting effective strings, and the process can be time-consuming. Moreover, there's a risk of excluding qualified candidates due to overly specific search criteria. In general all search engines use Boolean logic; however, Boolean operators can be written in different ways. Therefore, before searching, make sure you know how to use Boolean operators in a particular search engine. AND OR NOT is the correct notation for LinkedIn, but in Google AND is replaced by spaces, OR by | , and NOT by - . In Bing search engine it is even different.

Any disadvantages are outweighed by how helpful it is to know how to put together a Boolean string and find ideal candidates. Some job boards aren’t as Boolean friendly, so know that from the start.

When searching for candidates, it’s based on words in a resume/profile. Tailor searches based on research and what keywords someone with those skills writes in their resume/profile. When you use AND in between words, the more words, the more narrow your results will be. JavaScript AND angular AND programmer AND developer AND coding AND “computer science” AND “bachelors degree” AND “frontend” ALL the separate words would need to be in their resume/profile. For OR statements don’t forget to use parentheses. Only one of these words would need to be in their profile. You’ll get too many results. To elaborate on question #4 This is still basic, but try a mixture of AND, OR to get closer to what you want in your results: (JavaScript OR angular) AND (frontend OR “front end”) AND (programmer OR developer OR coder) AND “computer science” AND (“bachelors degree” OR “BS degree”) When words are inside the parentheses, you’re saying, “I only need one of these words to show up in the search, not all”. Because you don’t know what words the candidate will choose for their profile/resume, so one of them will be fine. Save your searches (in a word doc, Excel, OneNote, etc.) and add notes regarding the results.

Say you have a Recruiter job opening… A Recruiter that definitely is also a Sourcer and has Boolean skills and would be nice if they had one of these: negotiation or internal mobility or resource management skills. Recruiter AND Sourcer AND Boolean AND (negotiation OR “internal mobility” OR “resource management”) Boolean strings can get very complex if you want them to be, but more simplistic strings can be a good starting point.
