What are the advantages and disadvantages of signature-based and anomaly-based NIDS?

1 Signature-based NIDS

Signature-based NIDS use predefined rules or patterns to identify known attacks or malicious activities. They compare the network packets with a database of signatures, which are updated regularly by security vendors or researchers. Signature-based NIDS are effective at detecting common and well-known attacks, such as malware, worms, or denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. On the other hand, networks with limited budget and resources may opt for signature-based NIDS as they tend to be cheaper and easier to deploy and maintain. 4 Combining both types of NIDS

A possible solution to overcome the limitations of each type of NIDS is to combine both types in a hybrid or integrated approach. This way, the network can benefit from the strengths of both signature-based and anomaly-based NIDS, while minimizing their weaknesses. For example, a hybrid NIDS can use signature-based NIDS to detect known attacks and filter out legitimate traffic, and then use anomaly-based NIDS to detect new or unknown attacks and alert security administrators of any suspicious or abnormal activities. This can provide more comprehensive and reliable protection for the network, as well as more flexibility and efficiency for the security administrators.
