An IDE might support several languages; however, some are usually dedicated to a small set of languages, or a specific platform. Eclipse is actually a good example. It comes in a number of distributions or packages besides the many modules specific to that distribution. I don't remember the name of the packages; but with Eclipse you can have a fully supported JAVA IDE with almost every popular library available. The same is true to other platforms. The problem comes when you try to install incompatible packages.

The main purpose of a framework is to provide separation of concerns, to keep an integrated view through templates, to easily comply with standards, to add modules and plugging such as payment plugging, SEO, etc. Frameworks are not necessary simpler, neither faster. They do come with a learning curve. However; they make integration smooth, and even facilitate the contribution from different departments who are not necessarily technical.

Honestly; I don't have great experience testing with the use of software, other than a quick course in Selenium, and playing with some open source debugging with C++. About client-server; that's what Web Development is all about. Like any dinosaur; I prefer to keep client and server separate. That was the standard until Ajax and Jnode. I hated it. But finally; I understand it has some positive points, especially with the Internet of things. You can do a lot from the client; making actions look instantaneous. The time waiting for server response is seamlessly.

I use Nmap and OpenSSL only for basically managing my web applications. I am pretty much behind since Ubuntu started separating backend applications from the Desktop. Honestly; I didn't know until recently. I was often installing old Debian packages to keep my stuff working, not knowing that Ubuntu was keeping all backend with Ubuntu-Server.
