First of all, get them together in a space away from others. Give them turns speaking their side of the story without interruption. After each person has shared their side, dig into where the disagreement may have occurred and ensure that each party understands what each other is saying. This may look like asking one of the individuals to stop in their tracks and to fully explain their train of thought/ feeling. Use questions as a way to dig deeper into any potential discrepancies from each side, and to fully unpack any misunderstanding.

To help the two team members find common ground: Facilitate a Calm Discussion: Bring them together to share their perspectives openly. Clarify Intent: Have the feedback giver explain their intent to clear up any misunderstanding. Focus on Shared Goals: Shift the focus to team objectives and how constructive feedback supports growth. Encourage Active Listening: Guide each to listen without interrupting, fostering understanding. Reframe the Feedback: If needed, help rephrase the feedback in a way that’s neutral and constructive.

When two team members clash over feedback, it's a great chance to use CALM techniques. Start by fostering a safe space for open dialogue. Encourage active listening, where they genuinely hear each other and use paraphrasing to ensure understanding. Promote assertive communication so they can express their needs respectfully, even in tense moments. Help them recognize and manage their emotions to avoid projecting negativity. Emphasize the importance of thoughtful language and tone to prevent escalation. Finally, nurture a positive mindset by challenging biases and encouraging empathy, allowing them to see each other’s perspectives. This approach can help them find common ground and work together more effectively.
