If you have adequate and correctly developed processes, there do not have to be discussions or they have to be resolved by the process itself. The lack of processes is usually one of the main weaknesses identified in the analysis of companies and, in data governance, it is even more important to have everything well defined. If you have such a problem, do not try to resolve the dispute between the two employees. Take the opportunity to do the study globally, to define the process, communicate it and, once done, base the resolution of the problem on it.

It’s crucial to address the dispute with a structured approach. Start by referring to the organization's data governance framework, which should clearly define data ownership, stewardship, and roles. Facilitate a meeting where both parties present their cases, focusing on the data's origin, usage, and impact. Review access logs, data lineage, and usage rights to identify the rightful owner. If the governance policies are unclear, escalate the issue to a data governance committee for a decision, ensuring future disputes are avoided by updating policies to reflect clear ownership rules based on data lifecycle and utilization rights.
