As facility managers, we often encounter resistance to change! Adopting a change management approach is essential in most of our FM activities, far beyond just energy usage. It’s important to show people the positive impact of their actions to encourage change. Reward programs can be beneficial, and celebrating a team member or a whole team's success in meeting usage targets will inspire others to follow!

Lead by example. Most likely the client has seen poor implementation where conservation efforts feel "cheap". Show your client that it is not painful and they won't be missing out.

Knowing that all people are resistant to all kinds of change, I usually inform all stakeholders regarding the benefits of any new power or water consumption reduction initiatives. I explain the positive impact of the initiative environmentally and financially and how this is beneficial to them. Incentive, recognition and reward programs are very crucial to encourage tenants to be part of the change process, and provoke others to participate.

To overcome tenant resistance to energy usage changes, begin by educating them on the clear benefits—how these adjustments can lower utility costs and contribute to environmental sustainability. Offering incentives, such as reduced bills or perks for adopting energy-efficient practices, can motivate them to participate. Demonstrating how easy it is to make small changes in daily routines without major disruption helps ease concerns. Leading by example in common areas, with visible energy-saving initiatives, can inspire tenants to follow suit. Additionally, providing support, tools, and ongoing guidance will help tenants smoothly transition to new habits, fostering cooperation.

Wear his shoe: first you need to get a closer look over your tenant’s energy usage habits to provide SMART alternative solution without affecting his sales nor quality. Real-Time Solutions: you need to provide consultants from energy and sustainability management experts to guarantee efficiency with real show cases. Learn from Past Mistakes: revisit your contracts and make sure to insert firm commitments avoiding energy waste and additional fees to the above average consumptions. Expert Staff: FM Quality auditors usually support in such cases, so make sure hire the right person for the job.
