To encourage open communication, make feedback routine by incorporating it into regular discussions, not just formal reviews. Lead by example—share your own growth areas to show that feedback is for everyone. Reframe criticism as "developmental feedback," focusing on improvement rather than flaws. Reward those who engage in open feedback by recognizing their efforts publicly. Building a culture where feedback is expected and valued helps your team embrace it as a tool for growth, not criticism.

As a leader, I begin all my meetings by saying," Take feedback seriously but never personally." The following are important elements to ensure that team members do not avoid constructive feedback 1. Communication that is transparent, tactful, constructive, honest, empathetic & two-way. 2. Give shout-outs, applaud small wins, appreciate the improvement witnessed overtime. 3. Lead by example. Walk the talk. 4. Apppreciate publically, give feedback for improvement privately. 5. Train on feedback skills.

In my experience, having one-on-one chats can really help with this. I sit down with each team member to understand their resistance and explain that feedback is crucial for growth, not a personal critique. I emphasise that it’s all about improving our work, not about them as individuals. This personal touch often helps them see feedback in a new light and makes them more open to giving and receiving it in the future.
