We've been facilitators using the Technology of Participation methods and approach for more than three decades now. What I love about these methods is that they enable any team or group to be their 'best selves' - even if just for a modest amount of time - and work together in a truly productive, synergistic way on a common problem. Participation is enabled through the method itself; power dynamics suspended; and creative ways of approaching the matter are fostered. ToP methods are used worldwide, and they are enduring - for a very good reason. They work. They enable authentic participation and inclusion, and everyone in a group to get to the end of the session saying 'we did that' and 'we can stand by that.'

A facilitator does need to intervene when someone dominates the talk. Respect their opinions, but also make it clear that others have a right to speak. You can say something like, "your insights are valuable, but let's make sure everyone gets to participate." Asking everyone what constitutes a good session will assist to define the tone at the beginning. You can then gently remind whoever dominates the discussion of the groups own ground rules. This strategy demonstrates your support of the group's values rather than only your own.
