Efficient inventory control and waste management are interlinked, as excess inventory often leads to increased waste.

Inventory control and chain of custody's importance should always be a key factor, especially when speaking on the industrial and manufacturing industry. Talking from experience, working in a place that does not have inventory control or chain of custody practices in place can be a nightmare! Always having to walk across the facility to the material racks is already a largely wasteful. The implementation of such key digital infrastructure does not have to be a massive undertaking, as the market is currently flooded with solutions, many of which are free-to-use - talk about Lean! Saving on material orders, avoiding wasteful overproduced products and minimizing carbon are just a few of the numerous benefits! Let's Get Lean!!

When dealing with inventory control (IC) specifically, I personally would find it surprising if a manufacturing business is considered Lean without proper inventory control and chain of custody procedures. A simple database with fields including material type, dimensions, purchase order number, date of purchase, as well as for remnant dimensions, and customer purchase order - for when the remnant or stock is used for another order. I have implemented similar using nothing more than Google Sheets! Simple, free, and able to be shared throughout the work group. 3 of the 5S system taken care of in one small package - Sort, Set, Shine! All that's left is to make your IC tool's usage Standard across departments, and Sustain through its usage!

once you are on your way to LEAN, engaging with your product and service providers might lead you to a few surprises. Most distribution centers, MRO and other product and service providers have systems which you will be able to sync with your own inventory tracking. Many industrial MRO providers have options to empower your facility & make maintaining, repairing, and operating your equipment a breeze! Digital tool cabinets stocked with high turnover rate items act like vending machines & will dispense the required items, flagging your provider for more stock when your cabinet runs low. Material providers also will have their own databases which can sync with your own! Speak with your suppliers and ask what similar options they provide!
