Struggling to engage students in higher education classrooms?

I use the flipped classroom model. It involves students reviewing the lecture materials before class, freeing up time in class for active learning activities one might later assign, such as problem-solving, group work, discussions, case studies,etc. Developing a flipped model opens up more time for individualized instruction, allows active engagement during class time, has a deeper understanding by doing hands-on activities, and, allows peer learning and collaboration. To make this all work out, clearly define the pre-class materials and expectations, prepare in-class engaging activities that apply the pre-learned concepts, shift your role from lecturer to facilitator, and regularly assess and adjust the approach based on student feedback.

To engage my Indian students effectively, I incorporate technology like interactive apps and online platforms tailored to their preferences. I use active learning with group projects and discussions and include culturally relevant examples, such as local case studies and guest lectures. I implement gamification with quizzes and competitions to make learning fun. Adopting a flipped classroom model allows for interactive sessions and hands-on experiences through field trips, labs, and internships. I personalize learning with mentorship programs and flexible paths aligned with their goals. Regularly seeking their feedback helps me adjust my methods. I foster a sense of community through student clubs and peer learning.

Es necesario romper el paradigma y comenzar a ver al estudiante como el centro del proceso de aprendizaje, por lo tano, hay escuchar, comprender y analizar sus inquietudes y conocimientos actuales a través de una evaluación diagnóstica, a partir de ahí dise?ar actividades colaborativas, que fomenten la participación y la interacción (foros de discusión, análisis de caso, generación de productos multimedia, wikis, gamificación o flipped learning)

I put myself in the shoes of the learner and have struggled in the past to sit for an hour, let alone hours, staring and keeping my attention on a teacher or lecturer who is sitting and sometimes reading material that is often unengaging. This is why it all starts with movement—sitting on the desk, walking back and forth, writing and drawing on the available board, and making the students take part in that journey themselves by coming to the front and sharing what they have learned. This helps them develop communication skills, prepares them for presentations, and engages them more by using simple but efficient cognitive skills. One more tip that I love is to simply sit where they sit and give them the stage.

Integration: If a group if students are having problems retaining new technological information into a paradigm they are not entirely familiar with, tech integration can assist to help them better understand the principles of the technology. When children learn maths in class they are given principles, given tables and they are given small relatable real world challenges. Likewise in technology learning the principles, where to find the data, even more critically how to utilise that technology needs to be relatable in order to be retained by memory. Students need to comprehend how that technology might fit into their environment that they are already familiar with. Then learning is winning, as it has a new context and is relatable.

Gosto particularmente de entender os gostos dos alunos e assim poder pesquisar e criar momentos que envolvam esse mundo deles. Além disso, trabalhar com auxílio da Internet e de robótica, por exemplo, s?o recursos muito ricos para o processo da educa??o.

Importante atentar-se para a intencionalidade do uso das tecnologias. Usar por usar n?o oferecerá benefício algum. Cada tipo de conteúdo requer uma abordagem própria e terá uma tecnologia mais adequada para tal fim.

An effective way to engage the students is to ask them what they have learned in the class. You'll find out who has been listening and who's not.

Ter abertura e acolher os feedbacks recebidos também é uma parte fundamental. Docentes, de modo geral, encontram dificuldade ao receber esses feedbacks, especialmente quando partem dos discentes. Compreender o qu?o rico pode ser acolher essas percep??es e analisá-las em prol da melhoria contínua ainda é um diferencial de alguns professores.

When students think their instructors genuinely care about them as individuals, they are more likely to participate actively and invest in their learning. Strategies include: ? Learn and use students' names. ? It is helpful to ask students about their academic goals, career aspirations, and personal interests as you see fit. ? let students see you as a person, not just an authority figure. Share appropriate anecdotes about your own learning journey or professional experience. ? Be approachable: Establish clear "student" office hours and encourage students to use them regularly. ? Acknowledge students' progress and success, both in class and one-on-one. ?Arrive to class early or stay late to chat;

A rela??o professor/tutor/coordenador e aluno deve ser próxima, mesmo que online, mas que o aluno saiba que ali existe alguém que possa contribuir e auxiliar nos momentos de dúvidas e incertezas, que sempre o acompanham!

Find ways to relate to your students. Seek to understand their walk of life and take stock of the fact that their experiences may not be somewhat of a resemblance to yours. Much of what I hear in higher Ed is, “Well when I was in college…”: The value of higher education will not always be as integrated in the messaging that current students get. Much of what they consume is the algorithms of social media telling them that they could be tomorrow’s latest get rich quick story. That or becoming an influencer of some sort might overtake what others see as a thirst for knowledge. Additionally, one should always meet students where they are. I’ve always used basketball, but you can keep it as simple as a barbecue at a local park.

One of the most important techniques of the last years is the concept of a "flipped classroom". This means basically that you reverse traditional teaching by delivering your instructional content online outside of class, allowing in-class time for interactive, hands-on activities. This approach increases student engagement through active learning, collaboration, and immediate feedback.

Dividing workload up by assigning different tasks to different groups of students has been very helpful for many of my students in the past. Each group is responsible for explaining a specific aspect of the subject or a particular reading to their peers, followed by a brief and informal Q&A. Classes become more interactive, there is more peer learning, & it presents students with a clear objective for the seminar. At the start of the session, give each group a chance to chat about their prep amongst themselves and to decide how they would like explain it to the rest of the class. This helps to foster collaboration between students but also allows students to test their opinions/findings in a smaller group before addressing the wider class.
