Struggling to balance feedback and deadlines in teaching?
In the teaching realm, managing time between providing quality feedback and meeting grading deadlines is crucial. To strike this balance:
- Set specific days for feedback. Designate certain days for in-depth reviews to manage your workload effectively.
- Use rubrics to streamline grading. Rubrics can help you provide consistent and efficient feedback.
- Communicate expectations early. Let students know when they'll receive feedback, helping to manage their expectations and yours.

Balanacing both is challenging as both are essential for fostering student learning and maintain course progress. For this planning and timelines are extremly important. 1. Lectures should be efficiently organized by breaking down the course into chapters and further into specific topics. Each topic should be mapped to a defined time frame, ensuring the course progresses smoothly and stays on track. 2. Feedback shall be objective and shall contain pre- defined metrics more oftten , whether it is for students or for teachers , many metrics can be repetitive reducing time . 3. Leverage Technology - Use tools that provide instant feedback on low-stakes assignments (e.g., quizzes) to reduce your workload. Namaste.

Peer review and group feedback may be an option here! Learners can be encouraged to review their work. In the beginning, it may seem problematic or sometimes students can be cruel to each other! But with proper guidance and instruction, peer review is an amazing tool. Additionally, group works and evaluations can be fostered. In that way, you both encourage peer learning and save time for evaluation as well.

To balance feedback and deadlines effectively prioritize and plan. Set clear priorities based on the most critical learning objectives. Create a plan that allocates specific times for grading and feedback, ensuring deadlines are met without compromising quality. How? If you teach 4 classes-set a day to mark each. Try to complete marking during the lesson, because it is essential that you provide feedback during lessons. This could be done during the starter as students are completing their work, group tasks, or during the student independent task (as you are walking around supporting learners. Try to have a target # to mark). Recently I was advising on this topic and I shared this strategy and was sent a note of thanks… Thoughts?

I totally get the struggle! Balancing feedback with tight deadlines can feel like you’re spinning plates while juggling fire. As a content developer and proofreader, I’ve been there. It’s like trying to bake a cake while running a marathon. The trick? Prioritize what needs feedback now and what can wait. Sometimes, it’s better to focus on the big picture and tackle the nitty-gritty details later. Also, embrace shortcuts that still add value—templates for common feedback, quick audio notes, or even peer reviews. Remember, we can’t pour from an empty cup. Set boundaries with your time, and don’t be afraid to give yourself some grace when the deadlines loom. Sometimes good enough is just that—good enough!

Balancing feedback and deadlines can be tough, but setting clear priorities helps. I often break tasks into smaller, manageable chunks, focusing first on assignments that need immediate attention. Using rubrics has streamlined my feedback process, while dedicating specific hours for grading ensures I stay consistent.
