The software-design concept which is most similar is what I call functionally atomic decomposition. That's decomposing complex higher-order functions into more composable atomic functions. Atomic functions are a lot easier to write, so you can have people from various levels of experience work on several of them at a time. And you don't need to go fully-atomic.

There's something beautiful about a team that sits down and fundamentally grows their own software from scratch together, but only if such software is designed on behalf of the user. Start with pain points and gather a team that has a fire in the belly to build something better. Build a platform for your whole organization as a "one-team" platform. For example, at Google, some bright folks figured out that document collaboration was a mess. Now we have Google Docs. It even works across external organizations. Build a PaaS for your developers which codifies the grit and conviction your team has to build something better for all users across functions in the org.
