It is a skill that can be developed and improved through practice, mindset, and support. Resilience can help structural engineers deal with the current crisis and prepare for future ones.

Resilience involves maintaining mental and emotional well-being in the face of stress, trauma, or significant life changes. Resilient individuals demonstrate the capacity to endure, recover, and even grow stronger through adversity. Resilience is not about avoiding difficulties but rather navigating through them with a sense of perseverance and adaptability.

2 Resilience skills

There are four key skills that can help structural engineers build resilience: problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and self-care. Problem-solving is the ability to find solutions to complex and uncertain situations. Communication is the ability to express ideas, needs, and feedback clearly and respectfully. Collaboration is the ability to work effectively with others, leverage diverse perspectives, and manage conflicts. Self-care is the ability to take care of one's physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

3 Resilience practice

For structural engineers to develop resilience skills, they need to practice regularly and reflect on their progress. To enhance their practice, they can use tools and methods such as SMART goals, SWOT analysis, feedback loops, mindfulness, and self-compassion. SMART goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals that align with one's values and vision. SWOT analysis identifies strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in relation to a project or situation. Feedback loops enable one to seek and give constructive feedback for improved performance and learning from others. Mindfulness is the practice of being aware of one's thoughts, feelings, and sensations in the present moment without judgment or reaction. Self-compassion is treating oneself with kindness, understanding, and forgiveness in times of difficulty or failure.

4 Resilience mindset

Developing resilience also involves cultivating a positive and growth-oriented mindset, which includes embracing change, seeking challenges, learning from mistakes, celebrating successes, and being optimistic. This means viewing change as an opportunity to learn and innovate, taking on difficult tasks to stretch one's abilities, acknowledging and analyzing one's errors, recognizing and appreciating achievements, and expecting positive outcomes while remaining realistic and prepared for obstacles.

5 Resilience support

The final component of developing resilience for structural engineers is seeking and offering support from others. Networking, mentoring, coaching, peer support, and family and friends are all ways to build resilience. Connecting with other professionals in the industry can provide experiences, insights, and resources. Finding or becoming a mentor can offer guidance, advice, and feedback. Hiring or becoming a coach can help set goals, overcome challenges, and achieve results. Joining or forming a peer support group allows one to express feelings, exchange ideas, and offer encouragement. Reaching out to loved ones can provide emotional, social, and practical support. Practicing resilience skills, cultivating resilience mindset, and seeking resilience support can help structural engineers overcome difficulties, adapt to changing situations, and learn from challenges. Resilience not only helps them survive but also enables them to thrive in the new normal.
