Your vocal chords are muscles that need to be stretched & warmed up daily. In a warm shower is a great place for yawn sighs & other crazy sounding scales to get your voice and diaphram warmed up for any presentation or vocal performance - being very mindful never to hurt or push your vocals, but to stretch them until they're truly warmed up. You certainly want to be mindful the day before and the day of a performance to avoid any dairy & too much caffeine. (And an extra tip - my wonderful voice teacher in NYC used to tell me to use a small bit of white wine to coat your vocals - don't swallow it, but let it coat your throat going down - and you're ready!??)

Mindfulness/Full awareness of emotions, thoughts and bodily sensations is a prerequisite for any singer that is serious about their evolution and their art. If you are not aware of your emotional and mental state as a singer, you will not be able to properly connect with your artistry, let alone with a song. If you are not aware of your bodily sensations, you will never properly internalize any new learned vocal technique. Without mindfulness, the audience will perceive your performance as any other mechanical routine. Mindfulness is oxygen to artistry.

Singers really need to be mindful about warming up vocals. The warm up of vocals is as important as warming up muscles before playing a sport for the sports-person. You’ll rarely see a sportsperson playing without warming up, coz they know that’s the way they can keep injuries at bay. We shouldn’t just tell them, but must record their voice without warming it up and then record it again after a warm up session. They will see the results for themselves. This little activity can make them more mindful in using their voice. They will start respecting the gift by taking care of it, so that it can last well for the life time.

If you have to ask, you’ll never know! If you have to ask why, perhaps you aren’t really committed to being an authentic person yet? Mindfulness is another word for Patience. Mindfulness is another word for intentionality. If you rush through a warm-up, we hear it, we see it, and it doesn’t hit. The felt experience of singing is easy to see, and if you are a singer skipping the warm-up, or possibly, afraid to develop your inner landscape because it is scary to face your truth, we (the audience) see it. Don’t skip the warm-up!! Develop your voice every chance you’ve got! Strive for nuance, and emotional clarity, not just the power notes or the sound. Go deep, or go home!

Your vocal chords are muscles and just as you warm up in the gym before you exercise before you start your workout the same process is necessary breathing and stretching is very important for stamina and clarity.
