There are two type of overtime on the floor. - Blue collar overtimes. These are usually planned for meeting customer requirements and are compensated as per company and government policies. However, going beyond government approved hours in a week, leads to non compliance as well as operator fatigue, which can result into quality as well as performance issues. - White collar overtime - Engineers, Managers should never work late in office. As a leader, we need to foster the culture of leaving on time so that we can plan our day well and efficient. Maximum 9 hours a day and you will see a different level of productivity and efficiency in the teams.

Stop overtime, it's a culture, you'll soon have overtime as a pre requisite in any manpower plan. I'm only talking about the overtime for workers, it's a wrong practise of pushing for overtime instead of getting task done during shift hrs. You'll lose man-hrs during shift hours, as your staff/team would get used to the extra pay. Hence overtime doesn't need to be planned it can only be ad hoc or incidental if really required to manage an exigency. If you really think its required on a daily basis, try either of these - plan on increasing the manpower - better division of work - staggered shift

In SME Tier2 and 3 Auto ancillary industries, Overtime itself is motivation for Blue collar employees. Because the wage paid is very less and they cannot survive without OT. If they paid well they will be motivated and productive. No overtime needed.
-
The reasons for the over time are -inaccurate demand forecast - lack of proper production planning when forecast is OK -lack of regular monitoring of production when proper planning is there. -machine breakdowns due to failure of preventive maintenance. So we need to act on all these to avoid over time. All these need deep analysis, planning and execution. It is very important to monitor hourly production which will give lot of information about how we perform. Based on this, if proper actions are taken then the over time will come down and finally will become zero. Involve the operators in solving the issues in production which will make their life easy and also will motivate them.Operators are the best source for new ideas.
