2 Define your objectives

How will you measure their progress and success? How will you communicate these objectives to them? Having clear and specific objectives will help you design your content and activities in a logical and coherent way, as well as evaluate your workshop's effectiveness and impact. You can use frameworks such as SMART or Bloom's taxonomy to help you formulate your objectives.

As with many things, it is best to start with the end in mind. This is very true when planning a workshop. I start with this question: → What do I want to have happen in the lives of the attendees as a result of participating in this workshop? Once I have that in mind, I put words to that vision by writing three or four specific objectives. I like referring to Bloom's taxonomy to help identify the specific actions I want attendees to take. Bloom's taxonomy is a hierarchical list of verbs, that move from lower order thinking skills to higher order thinking skills. I choose a few words from this list and incorporate them into my objectives. Then I have a solid place to build from when designing my workshop.

3 Choose your format

Depending on your objectives, audience, and resources, you may choose to deliver your workshop online, face-to-face, or in a blended or hybrid mode. Each format has its advantages and disadvantages, and requires different considerations for interaction and content delivery. For example, online workshops may offer more flexibility and accessibility, but also pose more challenges for engagement and attention. Face-to-face workshops may allow more direct and spontaneous interaction, but also require more logistics and safety measures. You also need to balance the amount of content with the amount of interaction, so that your participants are not overwhelmed or bored. A good rule of thumb is to follow the 10-20-30 rule: no more than 10 slides, no more than 20 minutes of content, and no less than 30% of interaction.

6 Adapt and improvise

Finally, no matter how well you plan your workshop, you need to be prepared to adapt and improvise, depending on the situation and the feedback from your participants. You may encounter technical issues, unexpected questions, or changes in the agenda. You may also notice that some participants are more engaged or more confused than others. You need to be flexible and responsive to these challenges, and adjust your interaction and content delivery accordingly. You can use techniques such as checking in, polling, or asking for feedback, to gauge the mood and the needs of your participants, and to make changes on the fly.
