On-site workers are at odds over safety concerns. How can you effectively resolve their conflicts?

Every employee in our business (RSK Group) carries an authority to "stop work" card backed up and signed by the CEO. It should be used whenever the employee see's a potentially dangerous or un-safe situation in the working environment.

In our organization safety comes from the top down, we keep all employees up to date with their training and education on working safely at all times. When you are working on scaffolds whether 5 feet or 1,000 feet above ground you must recognize and have respect for what could happen to you if you don't put safety first, it must be the first step in all tasks. For example; take scuba diving, if you make a mistake you're done. I have always believed that no matter how many lessons or how much training you take, safety is a state of mind more than anything, and you must develope and maintain that state of mind to be safe.

Take a step back. Personalities and experience lend to differences in how workers plan to complete their task. As a supervisor you need to neutralize the situation. Have them understand that a common ground needs to be met. It's ok not always be in the same line of thought because that allows opportunities to open discussions. The goal is to complete the work. How can we do this safely so that both workers feel comfortable?- Is a question I would ask them. Once those guidelines are laid, most of the time, workers are able to set their differences aside and complete the work smoothly.

Understanding different perspectives and acknowledging worker concerns is the first step to resolving them. Our workers are our subject matter experts. Most health and safety people are generalists by necessity. Hearing out these individuals will not only hopefully help mediate and potentially resolve their issues, it will also likely provide you with a valuable learning opportunity.

It is all about the culture of the company I have seen many reputed companies say safety is the utmost priority for them but when it comes to practical scenes at site they are negligence. It depends upon the company, who need to create actual safety concerns & it easily influences workers. Which worker does not want to go home back after the work completion.

It all starts before you start. The project leads and safety lead needs to begin by holding a meeting to address all concerns and encourage workers to voice their issues. Emphasize the importance of completing Job Safety Analysis (JSA) for each task, which involves identifying potential hazards and determining preventive measures. Review and discuss each JSA with the team before starting any task to ensure everyone understands the safety protocols. By involving workers in the safety process and addressing their concerns, you create a safer, more cooperative work environment.

Using data and analytics is crucial for effectively resolving safety concerns. By gathering information from all parties involved and analysing historical incident data, safety managers can pinpoint areas that require attention. This approach allows for timely interventions and preventive measures. Data-driven decisions are more reliable than relying solely on intuition or personal opinions. National safety teams, like the NHS in the UK, use data to address patient safety issues. They collect incident reports, analyse data, and collaborate with partners to improve safety across the entire system. By gathering facts and separating emotions, safety professionals can prioritize safety concerns based on their impact and risk level.

En cualquier obra o trabajo además de la capacitación integral he tenido la buena experiencia de realizar diariamente dentro de la reunión o contacto rápido al inicio de la jornada un espacio en el que se hace una capacitación específica de seguridad relacionada con las tareas a ejecutar en ese día.

By so doing you reinforce and constantly remind on- site workers of safety at work and try to mimimise chaos and conflicts.

As I learned from first responder training every incident is a learning opportunity. No matter the outcome, conducting a lessons learned or how could we improve things after every incident or near miss leads to improvement. Constant improvement on every iteration of your safety plan is the answer.
