Negotiating a better job package: How do you get what you want?

I do not like the expression 'know your worth' as it almost implies that we can put a price tag on you when we all know your true value is priceless! But, having said this, I do agree that it's important to know your market value. To have a realistic idea of what that value is, I recommend the following approach: - Complete a skill assessment exercise, so that you are 100% clear on your profile; - Note your years of experience in a specific or related field; and - Research on job searching websites the salaries offered in jobs where you are a perfect match. Always note any specific qualifications and the location as these aspects can make offered salaries differ. You will then have a clear expectation of how much you should be paid.

Don't walk into any job negotiation room if you can't answer these 3 crucial questions. 1. Do you know your worth? 2. Can you confidently express your market value with concrete evidence to back it up? 3. Can you frame your requests as win-win solutions? These are the foundation of having a compelling argument that showcases your value proposition.

A great place to start, reach out to a recruiter and explore questions about roles they help people secure (and what the average salary is in your area). Everyone has different career preferences and components of a job that is most import to him or her. Along with salary and annual bonus, I've seen this include things like a sign-on bonus or relocation stipend for those who need money now, 401k benefits for those who want to plan early for retirement, flexible work schedules and remote working opportunities for those that value work-life balance, opportunity for progression for those that are career-motivated, or simply a different company culture that matches better.

-Ask for a complete offer in writing. Take your time to weigh the pros and cons of the offer. Never accept a verbal offer immediately. -Consider each part of the offer and prioritize which parts of the compensation package matter most to you. -Evaluate the whole deal and don’t focus only on the salary. -Know your worth and value in the market. -Be prepared for tough questions and consider why the interviewer is asking them. What are they trying to assess? -Show serious interest in working for the potential employer. -Behave appropriately during the negotiation and show a willingness to compromise while remaining, calm and professional. Remember to be open to finding mutually beneficial solutions during a negotiation.

One of the keys when you are preparing your pitch is not to give too many reasons for why you believe a better job package is warranted. It is far better to give 2-3 strong reasons, rather than rattle off 10. State your position, back it up, and then be quiet. You lose your power when you keep trying to justify something. Embrace any awkward silence. This is a game changer.

You don't have to be equally interested in all of them, just enough to ace the interviews. When you receive all the offer letters/emails, that's when you go to the employer of choice and say "Look, I've got these other job offers and they are paying me this and this. Would you be open to match them?" Blank out the companies' identities and show the relevant section of the respective offer letters to substantiate your claim. This is far more effective than market research/rates because the offer package would have already included what the potential employer thinks is fit for the market.

Reasons can include comparisons to market research, comparisons to what you're currently paid, or discussing the challenges of accepting a new job (uprooting family for a move, cost of living increases, having to re-establish yourself in a new company with all new work processes and new people). Graciously thank them for their offer, tell them how excited you are for the opportunity, and then give your pitch.

Choosing the right moment to respond is not simple. In my view, depending on the popularity or specificity of the career you are pursuing, you will have different response time frames. I certainly agree that you should not respond immediately, but rather evaluate and consider it more carefully, possibly responding after one to two days if there are many factors to consider. Being offered a job means that you have the potential to do it well, and you should be confident about yourself. Choosing an appropriate response will help increase your value. If the offer includes a suggested response date, you might consider responding a bit earlier, but it should not be an immediate response.

When it comes to choosing the right time for negotiating a job offer, consider the following points: - Once you receive a written job offer, take some time to review it thoroughly. Consider the whole compensation package including benefits, and other terms. - Give yourself time to assess the offer and gather information and avoid rushing into negotiations directly after receiving the offer. - It’s generally advisable to negotiate before formally accepting the offer. Once you accept the offer, your chances decrease. - Engage in discussions with the employer early in the process. Express your interest and ask for clarification on any aspects of the offer. - Aim to start negotiations well before the acceptance deadline.

Always keep the door open for future opportunities, you never know what the future holds. Express your continued interest in the company and stay in touch. Don’t burn bridges unnecessarily.

You might lower standards in some points to raise them in others that you feel are important to you. Remember, never aim to excel in all points; sometimes a small adjustment can help you win in negotiations

Yeah, if you've reached this step, congratulations on getting a suitable offer. Don't forget to thank the person who informed you and the person who interviewed you if you have a way to contact them. Reward yourself for your efforts and continue planning for your future.
