Key stakeholders are at odds over crisis communication. How will you find common ground?
In times of crisis, divergent views among key stakeholders can escalate tensions. To forge a path to consensus:
- Identify shared objectives to remind everyone of the common goal.
- Facilitate open dialogue, allowing each party to voice concerns and suggestions.
- Propose a neutral mediator to balance differing opinions and foster agreement.

Based on my experience handling crisis: ?? Identification Stakeholders is the key and will list all the key stakeholders with their RACI matrix in place. ??Forma a group and assing a leader to coordinate and provide public communication if there is a requirement ??Create a clear communication strategy that addresses each stakeholder's concerns. ??Provide timely updates to stakeholders to prevent misinformation and speculation.

During challenging times at Uniwide, when stakeholders had conflicting opinions, I focused on finding common ground by highlighting our shared objectives, such as maintaining compliance and ensuring business continuity. I encouraged open dialogue, allowing everyone to express their concerns, which helped create a sense of understanding. In one instance, we brought in a neutral third party to mediate and balance differing views, which ultimately helped us reach a consensus. This approach ensured that decisions were made collaboratively, even under pressure.

In reconciling stakeholder differences during a crisis, I focus on aligning everyone with a shared objective to anchor discussions. I make it a priority to facilitate open, constructive dialogue, giving each stakeholder space to express their concerns and ideas. Often, a neutral mediator proves invaluable, helping navigate heated moments with impartiality, so all voices are heard and balanced. By breaking down complex issues and finding commonalities, we can create a unified approach that reflects our collective interests and strengthens our crisis response.

To start, I’d bring stakeholders back to our core objectives and shared purpose in addressing this crisis. By fostering an open dialogue, we create a space for each person to express their perspectives and concerns. This process builds mutual respect and understanding, which are key to strong collaboration. Through active listening and a focus on our collective goals, we can align on a unified communication strategy that supports our mission. One thing I wouldn’t do, though I see it happen often, is jump into quick fixes without aligning everyone first. In crisis situations, there’s a temptation to move fast and take control, but without a shared understanding, it can cause missteps.
