How are you improving your solution architecture skills?

In my experience , across the ranks working for and with Internet Service Providers(ISPs)in South Africa, I believe one the fundamental skills as Solutions Architect is to listen with the intent to understand the following: 1. Understanding the nature of the Client's Business is Key. This is where it all starts, what does the client do and how does he/she achieve it with the current technology in place. 2.The Problem Statement. What is currently working and what is currently not working? What needs to or can be improved ? 3. Does the client have a vision or road map for the business? What are the timelines? 4. Budget, I believe it always comes down to spend, however the key to working around this to align the value for your spend.

Network with professionals in the field for insights and opportunities. Mentorship can provide valuable guidance and accelerate learning. Document your experiences and lessons learned. Contribute to open-source projects to gain exposure and recognition. Remember, the journey of improving solution architecture skills is ongoing. Adaptability, a commitment to learning, and a proactive approach are key elements in staying at the forefront of this dynamic field.

One thing I've found helpful, is working with Business Case Studies or existing clients. Review current solutions in place, understand them and redesign them with what you think is applicable. You can have these redesigns validated by Engineers or Senior Architects, which will in turn give you insight into whats skills or knowledge you are lacking.

One of the Best ways to enhance solution architecture skills is analyzing case studies of existing solutions, understanding their architectures and proposing improvements, do peer discussions of these designs for different perspectives and insights.

In my experience, as a solution architect, getting certified can significantly improve your skills and expertise in several ways. You can learn industry standards and best practices, add more credibility and recognition to your work, also adaptability to various domains. Example of certifications are: AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Google Cloud Certified – Professional Cloud Architect for technical certifications. You can also have methodology and frameworks certifications like TOGAF or SAFe for Architect.

Staying updated on industry trends and emerging technologies, incorporating them to practice is very important, Certifications is a great way to validate skills and best practices.

Asking for feedback is cornerstone in developing solution architecture skills as it accelerates professional progress, uncovers blind spots, and offers valuable information. It helps architects improve communication and decision-making techniques, fosters a culture of continual improvement, and helps them learn from both successes and failures. Regularly soliciting feedback on designs, decision-making processes, and project results helps identify areas for improvement. This integration of feedback allows architects to adapt to changing needs, anticipate problems, and continuously improve their abilities, ultimately leading to a more efficient and skilled solution architecture process.

I've learned that staying curious is critical... but not just about my field of study. If I limit myself to curiosity within my field of study, I am limiting my creativity to finding solutions within that field. Instead, I spend most of my time learning and research outside of my field of study. This includes biology, history, physics, neuroscience, and art. Going outside of your field of study will assist in lateral-thinking, which is critical to creativity. Expand your mind outside of your field of study, and you will naturally find new and innovative solutions to problems within your field.

To improve one's solution architecture abilities, it is crucial to maintain curiosity, practice skills, receive feedback, and learn from others. Constant self-evaluation and reflection are essential, as is seeking challenging tasks to expand experience and knowledge. Proactively obtaining professional qualifications and ongoing education helps stay updated with industry developments. Developing a wide range of skills, understanding technical details and the business environment, and working with diverse teams helps address problems. Strong time management and prioritization are also essential, as well as dedication to security procedures, ethical concerns, and compliance knowledge.
