How would you handle a client who insists on changing the script on the day of filming?

As someone who has had network executives show up on set as a scene is being lit and insist it doesn't need to be filmed (a scene where the two leads meet!), I kept calm but pushed back and insisted it was going to be shot because it was essential. The exec then said it would have to be rewritten and literally stood over me as I wrote it. It ended up being one of the best scenes in the movie, because I knew the actors better by then. But that does not excuse the network executive's actions. But that's show business, kid.

Impulsive reactions never lead to positive outcomes. Allow yourself to clearly listen to the information you're being told and sit with it for a few seconds. Think about the changes from their perspective then kindly talk through why the changes need to be made and how it might be possible to alter the script and accommodate the request. Impact of the adjustment needs to be made aware as well.

In the end, they are the client and our role is to facilitate their ideas, but we also have to temper expectations with the reality of the shoot.

Regarding limitations, I would highlight issues such as extending the filming schedule, exceeding the budget, or compromising the quality of key elements like lighting and sound. For example, if the changes require additional scenes or reshoots, we may not have the necessary equipment or crew available within the current timeframe. I would make it clear that pushing these boundaries could impact the final product’s quality and delay delivery.

I had a client show up with a bunch of ideas for shots that were not at all included in the approved shooting script. Sadly for him, the answer was flatly, “No.” To all of it. We had a 16-hour day ahead, and everything had been streamlined so that we could get everything for his commercial to fit the $15,000 budget. (I’m still impressed we pulled it off.) I did my best to tactfully set the boundary, but there were far too many moving parts to start adding creative choices haphazardly. It did hurt the relationship, but that commercial was one of the best things I made and he pulled in an ungodly amount of money from it. But injuries to pride are long-lasting.
