How would you address a situation where top-level executives have differing priorities for a key project?

When top level executives have varied perspectives, it should be welcomed. Allowing others to share their rationale behind the differing perspectives in an open and constructive discussion can help harness the collective wisdom of the top level executives. With an elevated mindset and a collaborative spirit the key focus for everyone would help ensure they are working towards the project's success. In guiding the discussion to identify and build the common ground will evolve consensus to plan the project priorities with ease.

If priorities are at odds, the first place I’d look is at the incentive structures. Is it possible misaligned incentives are creating conflicting priorities?

You cannot assess views from a third-party perspective. Each top executive is bound to have differing priorities, which is why they are top executives. The solution is to make sense of each other's priorities by listening to each other. Most people get stuck about their priorities when they have experiences that they have yet to be listened to, and listening does not mean agreement. The executives are likely to relent, yield, and collaborate in setting priorities by having been listened to and gotten. The key is to build trust by caring about what others care about and sharing with them what you care about. This method emerges as a new shared sense that is the basis of all cooperation and future design.

Here's how I would handle/recommend handling: First align with the company's goals. Project objectives that stray from overall strategic goals are in danger! So give yourselves a common baseline framework to evaluate priorities/ID which ones are most critical to success. You'll assuredly get out of your own way as an exec team with differing priorities. Then visualize impacts (including timeline), and figure out resource allocation and potential outcomes in a data-driven way. And seek both consensus and compromise. You'll benefit from having a clear decision-making process to avoid stalemate (perhaps a weighted voting system, or deferring to the CEO).

One thing to remember in these situations is that it is very easy for people to say they agree to avoid the conflict or because they are not brave enough to go against the group or are married to their ideas. This creates massive problems downstream. You must build a culture in an exec team to have different views, share their opinions, challenge each other, and debate the right approach, but once a decision is made, all get behind it and make it work and let go of their opinions to act as one voice.

I think it is important to also consider maintaining continuous communication by keeping channels open for regular updates, feedback, and transparent information sharing to ensure alignment and engagement. Also remember to celebrate milestones and achievements to boost morale and motivation and be open to adapting the project plan based on feedback and new insights, allowing for iterative improvements. In addition important to ensure resource allocation by confirming that adequate resources are allocated to meet the set goals. Lastly, regularly monitor and evaluate progress using key performance indicators and adjust as needed to stay on course. These additional steps will help ensure a successful and cohesive project outcome.
