This may sound outdated, but I see my demo reel as a movie trailer. I want it to encapsulate everything that I do and what I'm capable of. Viewers have short attention spans nowadays so showcasing your best work and your versatility is important. I wouldn't go past a minute and a half, and sound design can have a great impact on the pacing of your reel.

2 Choose quality over quantity

The next thing you need to remember is that quality matters more than quantity when it comes to your demo reel. You don't want to overwhelm or bore your viewers with too many storyboards that are mediocre, repetitive, or irrelevant. Instead, you want to impress them with a few storyboards that are polished, original, and relevant. A good rule of thumb is to include 3 to 5 storyboards in your demo reel, depending on the length and complexity of each one. If you are looking for a job as an Animation or Motion Graphics Designer (not an animator), compile your storyboards on a portfolio website. I recommend putting cover images of each project right on the front page. If you are trying to get a job as an Animator, create a video reel with your best animation work. While personal projects are acceptable, the person hiring will want to see the work you have created for clients. Put this reel on any platform you can. Some examples are YouTube, Vimeo, Behance, LinkedIn, Dribble, and Instagram. Include this reel front and center on your portfolio website.
