1 Problem definition

One of the first steps in conceptual design is to define the problem that the design solution aims to solve. This involves identifying the needs, goals, and constraints of the users and the context. IoT adds a new dimension to problem definition, as it requires designers to consider not only the human factors, but also the technical, environmental, and ethical implications of connecting devices and data. Designers need to ask questions such as: What data is relevant and useful for the users and the system? How will the data be collected, stored, and shared? How will the devices communicate and cooperate with each other and with other systems? What are the potential risks and benefits of IoT for the users and the society?

In a previous project, we applied IoT technology to redesign a smart home security system. By integrating IoT sensors and devices, we transformed the traditional concept of home security into a highly personalized and responsive experience and learned a lot from it. For instance, motion sensors could distinguish between family members and potential intruders, adjusting security settings accordingly. This innovative approach not only improved safety but also delivered a much more clear problem definition for us for the main scope of work.

2 Idea generation

The next step in conceptual design is to generate ideas that address the problem. This involves using various methods and techniques, such as brainstorming, sketching, prototyping, and testing, to explore different concepts and possibilities. IoT opens up new opportunities and challenges for idea generation, as it enables designers to create solutions that are more interactive, responsive, and adaptive. Designers can use IoT to enhance the functionality, usability, and aesthetics of existing products and services, or to create new ones that solve novel problems or meet emerging needs. Designers can also use IoT to create solutions that are more context-aware, personalized, and intelligent, by using data to tailor the design to the user's preferences, behavior, and environment.

When we are in the process of generating ideas, we have to consider all the parts that make up the ecosystem of the problem we want to solve. In this ecosystem, there will be the section on existing technologies, and we should not forget IoT. Therefore, if from the ideation of solutions, we have a clear understanding of the context in which we are and that the connectivity of products and services is already universal thanks to technology, there will be no problem in designing products or services that are already conceptualized and formalized accordingly.

3 Alternative evaluation

The final step in conceptual design is to evaluate the alternatives and select the best one. This involves comparing and contrasting the ideas based on various criteria, such as feasibility, desirability, and viability. IoT adds a new layer of complexity and uncertainty to alternative evaluation, as it requires designers to consider not only the technical and functional aspects of the design, but also the social and ethical implications. Designers need to evaluate how IoT affects the user experience, the user privacy, and the user trust. Designers also need to evaluate how IoT affects the environmental impact, the energy consumption, and the security of the design. Designers need to balance the trade-offs and risks of IoT, and ensure that the design is aligned with the user's values, needs, and expectations.

IoT product life cycles are terrible, for security and also for maintenance/usability. Do your best to avoid any product that you can't regularly update and patch. Nothing will turn a customer off more than an IoT device that has less/worse functionality over time.
