How important is a thank you note after a job interview?

Anyone who says that Thank You notes are a waste of time are flat out wrong. Thank You notes have 3 distinct benefits: 1. According to industry data, 80% of employers appreciate thank you notes but only 24% of candidates send them. Sending a thank you note sets you apart. 2. Thank You notes let you add more value to the process. You can use your Thank You to build on and add new information to the conversation you had in your interview. Most of your competition isn't doing this. 3. Thank You notes are an act of kindness and respect. Regardless of the outcome, someone took the time to sit down and learn about you and your background. Thanking them for that time is a kind thing to do and a respectful thing to do.

It's not the end all. But it's just the polite thing to do. It's should not make or break a hiring decision. But it's an opportunity to make yourself shine again.

I enjoy receiving thank you notes that express not only a thanks for my time, but also something I shared in the conversation that was of value to the other person. People love to help - and especially want to know HOW they have helped. Share this value in your thank-you!

Start with a personal touch – address the interviewer by name. This shows attention to detail and personalizes your message. Express your thanks for their time and the opportunity to interview, reaffirming your interest in the position and the company. In your note, briefly restate why you're excited about the role and how your skills and experiences align with the job's requirements. This is your chance to reinforce why you're a great fit. If there's something pertinent you didn't get a chance to mention during the interview, here’s where you can weave it in.

Send an email AND handwritten card! They should formatted differently. Within 24 hours, an email is a way immediately express gratitude, ask any additional questions, further a point you wished you had more time to connect on, and/or share an additional resource with the interviewer. This also can start a chain of communication. The handwritten note also expresses gratitude and thoughtfulness, however it goes the extra mile to show the thankfulness -- and not many people write them. Consider picking a card design that reflects your personality, interests, or stick with a traditional one! I encourage prepping these cards (addressed, stamped, etc.) so you can focus on a personalized message immediately after the experience.

We suggest that within 3 hours of the interview, you send the email. Ensure that you have ALL the interviewers names, even if you only have one email address. (You should have asked that before stepping in the room. Remember, the admin assistant is your best friend when you treat the person with respect!) Hopefully, you have already researched their email address protocol so, even if you don't have all the addresses, you can easily figure them out. Again, it shows your initiative! Handwritten notes can be a bit more difficult. Is your writing neat? No? Then skip this. Was the interview done remotely? You'd have to research WHERE to send it. How long will it take to reach them? Or, take 5 minutes and write it in reception before leaving.

No need for fancy fonts or formalities—keep it sweet and simple. Here's a simple format you can use: Greeting: Start with a warm greeting. Express Gratitude: Jump right into why you're writing. "I wanted to drop you a note to say a massive thank you for. Share Why it Mattered: Explain why their action meant so much to you. "It really made my day/week/life better because [explain why]." Personal Touch: Add a personal touch to make it more than just a note. Reference something you both connect on. Look Ahead: Express optimism about the future. Closing: Wrap it up with a friendly closing. Remember, the magic is in the sincerity, not the structure. Write like you're talking to a friend.

Send a Thank you note after your interview. Send it to the recruiter. We notice. Send it to everyone you've spoken to; you can ask the person that set the interviews up for the email addresses or ask them to forward a thank you note to everyone. It doesn't have to be lengthy, but thanking people for their time, and reminding them why you are right for the role you interviewed for is a step that can only help you in your job search/interview process. Thank you notes are appreciated and it does not go unnoticed when someone does not send one, especially when you're at the mid to senior level of your career.

I used to take thank you cards with me to the interview, do the interiview, cross the street to a coffee shop, write them in 15 mins, and then drop them by the receptionist to deliver them to the folks I interviewed with. It was very powerful and some life changing advice that I got from my college Career Center. All the interviewers were completely thrown off by this and it seared a lasting impression on their minds.

You should draft and prepare your thank you letter immediately after the conversation - however, I’m of the mindset to send 2-3 days after the interview. With other candidates interviewing (especially if you know the interview schedule) sending later will help bring you back to top of mind - and possibly above the other candidates.

Cheers, [Your Name]" This way, you're not only confirming that your note was received but also leaving the door open for future interactions. It's like a little bonus round of appreciation!

My thank you letter included a brief 30-60-90 day plan. Very effective and demonstrates importance of the opportunity and next steps.

Wurde kein Termin vereinbart, dann würde ich10 - 14 Tage warten und mich dann per Mail oder Telefon melden.

One thing that would be helpful us to be creative and use different mediums of communication like calling, chatting through whatsapp etc. Be mindful of being polite and understanding during the conversation. Give a short background of the conversation if communicating through different medium. Above all be patient during the whole recruiting process.

Emailing a thank you note is indeed convenient, however, you should also consider spam filters that may place your message in an inbox that they may not see. Thank you letters are a nice, added touch that can set you apart from other candidates, so just be sure to choose a method that will increase chances of receipt. Sometimes an old school thank you note via snail mail can fit the bill.

Write your thank you note in Word or another place that has good spelling and grammar checkers and then copy and paste it into the email. Nothing is worse than spelling mistakes! Before hitting SEND, proofread the entire thing just to make sure spellcheck hasn't missed "manger" when you meant "manager".

I can't recall ever sending a "Thank You" note post-interview. I suppose I wanted to avoid appearing desperate or tacky. However, after reading comments here, I'm now more open to giving it a try.
