I agree with this. I would also like to add that technical drawings highlight the fabric choices and colours which is a very important part of any garment. If the fabrics chosen aren’t complimentary or the colours are off the outcome can be rather tacky and jarring.

Technical drawing can make you achieve a lot but am sure, it does not do anything to fitting. It helps to visualize to an extent and is limited in it's visualisation, that's where 3D is most suited for.

I believe technical drawing helps with pattern making as it helps to explain the concepts behind the patterns made. Here, a pattern maker leads the way by creating the pattern of the garment in the way it should be considering the fabrics to use, the seam allowances at every point, sewing methods to be used at every seam, measurements, shapes, points, curves, etc and all this information is given to the person doing the technical drawing. He then interprete all this information in his technical drawing presentation so that whoever gets hold of the patterns and the technical drawing knows what to do. The points of measurement comes from what is in the patterns made as well as the construction sheet details.

Creative pattern cutters love to work from an artistic sketch and interpret. But there are aspects of a design that you can only show in a technical drawing. If you have a specific idea in mind and you don’t want the pattern cutter to guess, you can show them exactly what you want. It means that you get to make all the decisions. In a good, collaborative relationship a technical sketch is a quick way to communicate clearly.

In my opinion being a strong technical designer is the key to ensure quick and effective execution of a collection. Having learned this skill early in my career has been so valuable. Whenever a fashion student has asked me for advice I tell them learn to be a good technician first and you will be much more skilled as a designer and a valuable employee when this skill makes you a problem solver.

Yes, this is what makes garment production interesting because after every step, information are either changed, revised or removed. Sample makers are important in this chain and they need to be very professional as their input is very important to the final design. They should be able to advise on best sewing methods, advice on pattern making methods or shapes as might affect the samples being made and all this suggestions help both the pattern maker, tech pack maker and designer for the final product.

Technical drawings alone help at the sample making stage, but in production the factory would follow the approved sample (made from the technical drawing) for production and treat the technical drawing as additional information.

For production, the technical drawing becomes the handbook that will answer every question that might arise during production that the sample can't answer. The technical drawing must carry information that is correct and accurate for production to use. It must also have information not on the patterns and not in the sample but needed for production. Any deviation from it could mean a bad or incorrect item being produced. That's why the technical drawing is a document that contains not only drawings but as many information as possible. It also needs to be updated at every stage of the product design process, from illustrations, to sample making, to pattern making and then before production.

You can improve your technical drawing skills by getting a "template" that will allow you to draw by hand quickly but to make your technical drawings more useful, you really need to determine points of measurement that are easy for pattern makers to follow and learn as much about construction as possible

you can start learning to use adobe illustrator or you can do it in procreate and you will also need a good quality template so you can work on it
