How does serverless architecture handle scaling?

From a developer's standpoint, serverless architecture not only streamlines scaling but also liberates you from the intricacies of server management. By allowing the cloud service to dynamically adjust resources, your attention remains centered on refining business logic and enhancing user experiences, fostering a more efficient and cost-effective development process.

Serverless is a marketing term. You pay money to make the underlying machines someone else’s problem. And - if you underutilise your existing infrastructure - you might still save money in the process.

We can divide the answer/ benefit in sections of perspectives: 1. The Developer: He/She has to focus only on logic. And that logic needs to be efficient that can be executed certain time limit.Point is: He will do the real development job for the given task 2. Business: Lets think about small scale companies. They have financial and management limits over resources. And here is the easy way to address both issues with services like lambda. 3. Deliveries: Anywhere in the industry, releasing the feature is complex process. It involves layers of securities, authentications, authorisations, etc. Also, we need to maintain stages of release cycles as well. And here cloud itself solves or makes easier the process.

Serverless is not server less, it actually provides an abstraction layer where servers are being managed by someone else(mostly cloud providers like AWS, GCP, Azure so on). With this understanding, before using serverless services offered by these cloud providers we must go through their SLOs. Let's take an example of Google Cloud Dataflow, a streaming runner that can be utilized for streaming pipelines with apache beam. Google says it is server less, but our pipeline can actually choke and stuck due to a bad design.

Serverless liberates you from dealing with all server management and infrastructure. It is very useful when used right. But not everything needs to be serverless. Consider it wisely. Based on my experience, it is beneficial to get design review from peers and make cost estimation with best and worst case scenarios.

Having worked at AWS Lambda, I know about it in detail. First of all serverless runs on servers. It’s just that someone else is managing it for you. Having understood this, it means the abstraction layer aka the cloud provider needs compute hardware capacity to scale the workloads. Different customers based on scalability requirements are sharded in the cloud to allocate them compute resources. Concurrency is a configuration provided with upper and lower limits set by clients that define the bounds of scale. There is concurrency counter service in serverless architecture to understand how much a workload is consuming resources. As the workload is increasing, concurrency counter would invoke the sharding service to scale the workload.

Serverless function provides both vertical and horizontal scaling options. Most of the cases scale out(horizontal scaling) easier and preferred options in serverless as it can spin up new instances quickly and easily. Most cloud providers give the option to scale out/in(horizontal) based on events like number of http requests or other events. Be careful enough to set both scale in / out rules in such a way that they don't overlap. Otherwise you hit a condition called flapping where one rule will try to scale in and another to scale out and ultimately failure of service.

Serverless functions offer dynamic scalability: ?Event-Driven Execution: Triggered by events like HTTP requests or database changes, serverless functions activate only when needed. ?Automatic Instance Management: The cloud service automatically creates or destroys function instances based on demand, ensuring efficient resource utilization. ?Isolated Execution: Each function instance operates in isolation, with dedicated memory and CPU, guaranteeing consistent performance irrespective of load. ?Managed Load Distribution: The cloud provider handles load balancing and routing, ensuring optimal distribution of incoming requests across available function instances.

They automatically scale their capacity and performance to match application demand, adjusting resources dynamically without manual intervention. They eliminate the need for pre-specifying database size or instance count, offering cost efficiency by charging based on actual usage. these databases inherently provide high availability, automatic backups, and recovery options.

Just like serverless functions, when you are not very sure of the scale of usage and size of data, you can use the serverless database. They follow the same philosophy of dynamically provisioning compute and storage for your database. However, it should be noted that these databases normally cost more than a regularly provisioned database. In my experience, the primary use case is where someone wants to analyze, test, verify some data, and then remove it once the task is complete. The auto scalability of storage and compute fulfills this requirement best.

They scale automatically to accommodate any amount of data, offering virtually unlimited space and bandwidth. It provides robust features like encryption, replication, and access control. Data management is simplified through APIs, SDKs, and cloud service integrations.

Just like for serverless functions, you don't manage CPU and memory - for serverless databases, you don't need to manage the storage and IO (read/write to DB). The cloud provider extends the available storage space to your database as and when more data arrives. But you need to also understand that this extension is in large memory blocks and not per record. For example, you start with a database storage of 1GB and once your data occupies 90% of that space another 1GB can get appended to the existing storage. As mentioned earlier the tradeoff is always cost for this level of flexibility

Monitoring tools would then capture and display real-time data on the function's performance, allowing developers to identify bottlenecks, optimize code, and ensure smooth scalability without compromising on user experience.

It's also important to consider serverless architecture's implications beyond the technical aspects. As the scaling abilities of serverless architectures not only impact the technical infrastructure but also directly affect business scalability. Serverless scaling brings to business operations a new perspective. For instance, the ability to rapidly adapt to changes in user demand or market fluctuations without the overhead of managing infrastructure empowers businesses to be more responsive and competitive.

A few things to be very careful in serverless architecture planning: 1. State management - You are serverless. State needs to be managed externally. You no longer have the ability to reference your local server even for tests. 2. Warmers - These need to be in consideration so that you never experience cold boots. An easy NoOp version of the API can always be created for this purpose. Or if you have synthetic monitoring, using that to trigger your serverless API every so often. 3. Testing - Make sure you write your code so it can be tested locally. Without doing this, you can pigeonhole yourself in testing directly through your platform's GUI and remove possibility of strong CI/CD with test automation against your serverless platform.

Serverless computing (Lambda on AWS, Cloud Functions on GCP, etc.) have an inherent cold-start time on first invocation (or if a function hasn't been called in a while). This is because, under the hood, your cloud provider starts a fresh container in which to run your code, and this process is not instant. In latency-critical applications, consider invoking your function every so often to keep this underlying container "alive". Your cloud provider may also offer a service to take care of this automatically, such as SnapStart for AWS Lambda.

Consider the cost of serverless solutions and whether they are appropriate. Also consider the use case and whether you need to maintain a session state. Serverless functions are ideally stateless so unsuitable to many kinds of architecture and design patterns.

A small addition to this topic is important to note that in recent years the concept has expanded considerably beyond just using functions. Nowadays, major cloud providers offer solutions like Azure Container Apps, AWS App Runner, and Google Run. These are serverless container services highly scalable based on demand, popularizing the adoption of serverless microservices.
